Chicago Women's Alliance
"UNEARTHING PASSIONATE PURSUITS"
Gabrielle Lyon, Executive Director, Project Exploration
The University of Chicago, Chicago Women's Alliance (CWA or Alliance) is an affinity group created for women forty-five and over who are alumnae, faculty, administrators and or research associates. The Alliance's primary mission is to address the social, intellectual and professional interests of this diverse population of University of Chicago women, while connecting them with the broader University community. CWA’s goal is to provide opportunities for like-minded women with significant life experience and great intellectual curiosity to connect and to share mutual interests as well as to provide a forum for new learning.
"Unearthing Passionate Pursuits," Gabrielle Lyon, will discuss how she balances her interests in paleontology and social justice activism with her passion for science education while at the same time working on a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction. During her presentation Gabrielle will also address the following questions -- Where is the best location to dig for dinosaurs? What is required to survive a four month expedition to the Sahara? How do you discover a new predatory dinosaur species, Deltadromeus agilis -- agile delta runner? What are some of the ways to address the issues of access to science? When is the right time to launch a not for profit science organization? What is the best way to harness the processes of scientific discovery to create life changing educational opportunities for minority youth and girls? www.projectexploration.org
Gabrielle Lyon, AB'94, AM'94, Executive Director, Project Exploration. Early in her career Lyon was selected to be a Fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center where she worked as a writer and researcher for the education magazine Teaching Tolerance. In 1996, Lyon became Director of the School Change Institute and also served as the Small Schools Workshop, Outreach Coordinator at the University of Illinois. Lyon's honors include representing the International Association of Educators for World Peace as a delegate to the United Nations, addressing the United Nations Subcommittee on Human Rights and being recognized twice as one of "Tomorrow’s Leaders Today" by Public Allies.
Project Exploration, was cofounded by Gabrielle Lyon and University of Chicago paleontologist Paul Sereno in 1999 as a not for profit science education outreach organization. Gabrielle became Executive Director in 2000. One of the organization’s primary goals is to bring the excitement of scientific discovery to minority youth and girls through innovative hands-on educational opportunities in order to advance scientific literacy. www.projectexploration.org
